Pros & Cons of Being Iced In

And we are currently on Day 4 of the great DFW Ice Storm of 2013. It is below freezing this morning so Matt is working from home for the first half of this morning until the roads clear up a bit. That will make for a different Monday but I don't mind :P

Anyway, I figured I would post some of the highlights and low points of being locked in for 3 days because it's already fun to look back at the past few days. First I will say we were blessed to never lose the electricity so the experience would have been completely different had that happened. But, with that said...

Pros
-Waking up to a winter wonderland was pretty fun. First time we had seen our area in snow/ice so that was nice.
Friday around our apartment complex

-Cooking and eating galore! I had gone to the grocery several days beforehand in preparation for just this and it paid off.
Dude. Frozen pizza has come a long way. DiGiorno Pizzeria
Three Italian Meat or something like that- highly recommend!
Whole wheat buttermilk pancakes & scrambled eggs for Sunday brunch
-Not having to put on real clothes. No make up + comfy clothes for the win.

-Playing with ice. Yesterday it went above freezing for a few hours so before we headed out briefly for dinner, we decided to try to 'melt' some of the ice in the driveway ourselves. It worked a bit and it was fun!
Used those metal poles to knock chips in the ice
Oh wait, we can play ice hockey with the chips
Whee!!
-Christmas crafts! We finished decorating for Christmas and now it is so festive inside.
Target DIY crafts are awesome :)

Our 2013 memories ornament
-Two words: flannel sheets.

-Watching trucks fail to drive on the ice. It was a little entertaining, I must say.

Cons
-I went a little stir crazy. I didn't want to drive in the ice but just knowing I couldn't go anywhere even if I wanted to wasn't the best feeling.

-Getting out of bed in the morning wasn't fun.

-The internet was overloaded so that meant Netflix streaming was pretty poor and we couldn't stream the SEC championship very well. I know, first world problems and all, but still a negative.

-The incessant beeping. Ever since Thursday, we have heard a constant beeping nice from an unknown source. All day, all night. We have turned on the fan at night to cover up the noise and the irony of that isn't lost on us.

But really, it hasn't been that bad. Having a forced stay-cation for the past 3 days has been pretty nice, especially since we didn't lose power. My heart goes out to those that have and I have experienced several power outages following ice storms to know how bad that is. But we're ready for life to get back to normal so here's hoping the rest of the ice melts & evaporates off this afternoon!

So what was my weekend. How was your's?

  1. I'm glad you guys never lost power! Losing power in ice storms, or in general, is never fun. We got snow out here and it's the first time we've been around snow in 3 years so it's been interesting! It sounds like you guys made/are making the most out of your time stuck inside!

  2. wow!! That's some crazy ice! we had snow on Tuesday but it's already melted and gone now. Doesn't matter though..I pretty much haven't left the house for the past 3 1/2 weeks!! I'm so busy with the little one to think about it or go stir crazy though, and my MIL comes over once a day so I can walk the dog, which is def. nice! Glad you had a good stay-cation weekend!
